Coverage That Works for You

Bodily Injury Liability

Covers medical expenses and lost income for people you injure in an at-fault accident. Nc now requires at least $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident as of july 2025.

Property Damage Liability

Pays for damage you cause to someone else's vehicle or property. Nc requires a minimum of $50,000 — But we often recommend higher limits given the cost of modern vehicles.

Collision Coverage

Covers repairs to your car after a collision with another vehicle or object, regardless of who's at fault. Essential in a contributory negligence state like nc where recovering from the other driver can be difficult.

Comprehensive Coverage

Protects against non-collision events: theft, vandalism, hail, flooding, fallen trees, and hitting a deer. Critical in the triad where spring hail storms and hurricane remnants are common.

Uninsured/underinsured Motorist

Covers your medical bills and vehicle damage when the at-fault driver has no insurance or not enough. With roughly 1 in 8 nc drivers uninsured, this coverage is essential.

Medical Payments (medpay)

Pays for medical expenses for you and your passengers after an accident, regardless of fault. Covers hospital visits, surgery, x-rays, and even dental work from the accident.

Rental Reimbursement

Covers the cost of a rental car while your vehicle is being repaired after a covered claim. You choose a daily limit and maximum number of days.

Roadside Assistance

24/7 help for flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. Available as an add-on for a small additional premium.

Programs Only Allstate Offers

These aren't generic coverages — they're exclusive Allstate programs designed to save you money and reward safe behavior.

Drivewise

Safe Driving Rewards
free to add

Free to enroll on any allstate auto policy. The allstate mobile app tracks driving behavior — Speeding, hard braking, phone use, and late-night driving — And gives you personalized feedback. Most drivers earn a policy credit at renewal. The app also includes free crash detection: if a collision over 15 mph is detected, you get a notification with options to call 911, request roadside assistance, or start a claim.

Deductible Rewards

Vanishing Deductible
up to $500 off

Get $100 off your deductible the day you sign up. For each year you remain claim-free, you earn another $100 off — Up to $500 total. Your deductible can shrink all the way down to $0 over time. For 6-month policy terms, you earn $50 per term instead.

Accident Forgiveness

Optional Add-on

Your rates won't go up after your first at-fault accident. This is an optional feature you can add when purchasing your policy or anytime after through your allstate account. In a contributory negligence state like nc, where fault matters enormously, this is especially valuable.

New Car Replacement

For Vehicles Under 2-3 Years Old

If your new car is totaled, allstate may help pay to replace it with a brand new one of the same make, model, and equipment — Not just the depreciated value. Considering new vehicles can lose 20% of their value in the first year alone, this coverage can be worth thousands.

Discounts You May Qualify For

Bundle Tip

the most common bundle in nc is auto + home. but adding an umbrella policy on top often costs less than you'd expect and dramatically increases your liability protection — especially important in a contributory negligence state.

Multi-policy Bundle

Save up to 25% when you bundle auto with home, renters, condo, or life insurance.

Drivewise Safe Driving

Earn a personalized discount based on your actual driving habits tracked through the allstate app.

Good Student Discount

High school or college students with a b- average or above can earn a discount on the family auto policy.

Student Away at School

If your college-aged child is away at school without a car, you may qualify for reduced rates on their coverage.

Anti-lock Brake Discount

Anti-theft Device Discount

Cars with factory-installed or aftermarket anti-theft systems qualify for a premium reduction.

Responsible Payer Discount

Pay your premium on time consistently and you may qualify for this loyalty-based discount.

Fullpay Discount

What's Covered — and What's Not

Understanding the boundaries of your policy helps you avoid surprises when you need coverage most.

Typically Covered

your liability for injuring someone in an accident (bodily injury liability)
your liability for damaging someone else's car or property (property damage liability)
medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault (medpay)
damage to your car from a collision, regardless of fault (collision)
theft, fire, hail, flooding, vandalism, or hitting a deer (comprehensive)
your costs when the other driver has no or insufficient insurance (um/uim)
rental car reimbursement while your car is being repaired
roadside assistance for breakdowns, flat tires, lockouts, and towing
loan/lease gap coverage if you owe more than the car is worth
aftermarket parts and custom equipment with an endorsement

Typically Not Covered

routine maintenance like oil changes, new tires, or brake pads
mechanical breakdowns from normal wear and tear (consider allstate's extended vehicle care)
personal items stolen from your car (covered by home or renters insurance)
using your personal car for ridesharing or delivery (needs a commercial or rideshare endorsement)
intentional damage you cause to your own vehicle
racing, track days, or off-road use
damage while driving without a valid license

Real Consequences

What Happens Without It?

the scenario

You're driving on I-85 near Greensboro when another driver runs a red light and T-bones your car. You suffer a broken collarbone and miss 6 weeks of work. Your car is totaled. The at-fault driver has only NC's minimum liability coverage.

without coverage

The other driver's minimum policy pays out $50,000 for your injuries — but your medical bills are $78,000 and your lost wages are $12,000. You're $40,000 short. Without uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage, you pay the difference out of pocket. And under NC's contributory negligence rule, if the other driver's insurer argues you were even 1% at fault, you could recover nothing at all.

with allstate coverage

Your Allstate policy's uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage kicks in to cover the gap between what the other driver's insurance pays and your actual losses. Your collision coverage pays to replace your totaled vehicle (minus your deductible — which may be reduced through Deductible Rewards). Medical payments coverage helps with immediate bills regardless of fault.

Real Scenarios, Real Answers

Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. Here's how your coverage works in situations North Carolina residents actually face.

The I-40 Pile-up and Contributory Negligence

You're in stop-and-go traffic on i-40 near greensboro. Someone rear-ends you, pushing you into the car ahead. Because nc follows pure contributory negligence, if you're found even 1% at fault (maybe you were following too closely), you can't recover anything from the other driver. Your own collision coverage pays for your car repairs, and medpay covers your medical bills — No matter who's technically at fault.

Hurricane Remnant Floods Your Car in High Point

A tropical storm remnant stalls over the triad, causing flash flooding on main street. Your car is parked on the street and gets swamped. This is a comprehensive claim, not collision — Your comprehensive coverage pays for the water damage minus your deductible. If you've been enrolled in deductible rewards for a few years, that deductible could be significantly reduced.

Hit by an Uninsured Driver on Wendover Ave

You're driving on wendover avenue when someone runs a red light and t-bones you. They don't have insurance — And with 1 in 8 nc drivers uninsured, this isn't uncommon. Your uninsured motorist (um) coverage steps in to pay for your medical bills and car repairs, so you're not left covering someone else's mistake.

Spring Hail Storm Dents Your Car in the Triad

A spring storm rolls through high point and drops golf ball-sized hail, covering your car in dents. This is a comprehensive claim. You pay your deductible (which may be as low as $0 if you've been in deductible rewards for several years), and allstate handles the repairs. Weather-related comprehensive claims generally don't affect your rates the same way at-fault accidents do.

Teen Driver Rear-ends Someone at a Stoplight

Your teenager rear-ends another car at a stoplight on eastchester drive. It's clearly their fault. Without accident forgiveness, this at-fault claim could increase your premium at renewal. With accident forgiveness, your rates stay the same — Giving your family financial breathing room while your teen gains experience.

What the Numbers Actually Mean

Insurance limits can feel like alphabet soup. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what you're actually buying.

100/300
bodily injury liability

Covers up to $100,000 in medical bills for one person you injure, and up to $300,000 total for everyone in the accident. Nc minimum is now 50/100, but we recommend higher limits — A single er visit can exceed $50,000.

100k
property damage liability

Covers up to $100,000 in damage you cause to other people's property. Nc minimum is $50,000, but consider that a new truck or suv can cost $60,000+. If you total someone's new vehicle, the minimum won't be enough.

100/300
uninsured/underinsured motorist

Matches your liability limits to protect you when the other driver has no or insufficient insurance. In nc, um/uim is required unless you reject it in writing — And with the state's uninsured driver rate, we strongly recommend keeping it.

$500
collision deductible

The amount you pay out-of-pocket before allstate covers the rest after a collision. With deductible rewards, this could shrink by $100/year down to $0. A higher deductible means a lower premium.

$250
comprehensive deductible

Your out-of-pocket cost for non-collision events like theft, hail, or hitting a deer. Often set lower than collision because these events are less frequent but can still be costly.

You Might Need This If...

you drive in heavy triad traffic daily (i-40, i-85, wendover, eastchester)
you couldn't afford to replace your car out-of-pocket if it were totaled
you have a long commute and can't be without a car for repairs
you want protection from nc's high uninsured driver rate
your car is new, financed, or leased (consider new car replacement and gap coverage)
you park outside where hail, falling trees, or theft are risks
you have a teen driver on your policy
you drive in areas with high deer or wildlife crossings (comprehensive is key)
