What is Wind & Hail Insurance?

Wind and hail insurance, often called "hurricane insurance," is a part of your homeowner's policy that covers damage specifically caused by wind and hail. In coastal states like North Carolina, this coverage is crucial and often has its own separate deductible.

Important: Wind damage and flood damage are not the same. You will need a separate flood insurance policy to cover damage from storm surge or heavy rains.

The North Carolina Hurricane Risk

From the Outer Banks to the western mountains, nowhere in North Carolina is immune to damaging winds from hurricanes and tropical storms. Recent events like Helene (2024) have shown that even inland areas can suffer devastation.

Wind Coverage Options

Understanding your policy is key. Here are the most important components of wind coverage in NC.

Wind/Hail Deductibles

Unlike a standard flat-dollar deductible, wind deductibles are often a percentage (1%, 2%, 5%) of your home's insured value. For a $300,000 home with a 2% deductible, you would pay the first $6,000 of a wind claim.

The NC Wind Pool (FAIR Plan)

For coastal properties in 18 counties, wind insurance is often provided by the North Carolina Insurance Underwriting Association (NCIUA), also known as the "Wind Pool". This is a wind-and-hail-only policy that supplements your main homeowner's policy.

How to Prepare Your Home & Your Claim

Preparation is the best defense. Taking steps before a storm can save you thousands and make the claims process smoother.

  • Review your policy annually to ensure you have enough coverage.
  • Create a home inventory with photos and videos.
  • Secure loose outdoor items: patio furniture, grills, etc.
  • Install hurricane shutters or have pre-cut plywood ready.
  • Know your evacuation route and have an emergency kit.

After the Storm:

Take photos of all damage before making repairs. Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage (e.g., roof tarps) and save receipts.
